Artist Biography
Local artist Doug Britt has been painting in the Hawaiian Islands since 1974. A graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute with honors, Britt returned to Kauaʻi in 1979, where the island has remained his enduring source of inspiration. His fascination with creative life on a remote island finds its way into his abstract imagery, weaving together familiar icons of Hawaiʻi with humor, curiosity, and thoughtful observations about the contradictions of island life.
Outside the studio, Britt creates whimsical sculptures from discarded materials collected on Hawaiian beaches and in thrift stores. His playful ships, planes, and floats draw inspiration from childhood memories and have become instantly recognizable works among collectors. Today, Doug Britt is a celebrated Hawaiʻi artist whose original paintings and sculptures are found in collections around the world.
